N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) is an organic compound with the formula (CH2CO)2NOH. It is a white solid that is used as a reagent for preparing active esters in peptide synthesis. It can be synthesized by heating succinic anhydride with hydroxylamine or hydroxylamine hydrochloride.

Cross-Linking Reagent: NHS is frequently used in conjunction with N-ethyl-N'-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) to form NHS esters. These esters are highly reactive and can be used to link proteins, peptides, or other molecules to surfaces or to each other.

Bioconjugation: In biochemistry, NHS esters are valuable for labeling and tagging biomolecules.
Stability and Reactivity: NHS esters are more stable than their unmodified counterparts and are typically easier to handle.
Applications: Beyond bioconjugation, NHS is used in a variety of research and clinical settings, including in the synthesis of materials for drug delivery systems,
